eKathimerini — Health authorities in Crete are on alert after three children under the age of 7 were diagnosed with meningitis in the last 12 days. All three of the children are being treated at the Chania general hospital, with doctors saying they were confident of a recovery.

According to authorities, the children came from different parts of the island: Rethymno, Apokoronas and Daratso.

A school in Rethymno where one of the meningitis cases was detected remained closed on Friday and children and staff were administered antibiotics as a precaution.
