Two young students of the Technological Institute of Chania died in an accident, when their quadbike hit the protective barrier over a cliff road in Koumbeli, a short distance to the west of Kounoupidiana where the TIC is based.
The accident happened around 7.30 p.m.
The causes of the accident are under investigation, but fire service officers who arrived at the scene of the accident believe that the riders were ejected into the cliff after their vehicle hit the barrier.
A 23 year old friend of the students, who was following the quadbike on a motorbike went in the water to save them them after calling the Authorities for immediate help.
A diver located the bodies two hours later while the 23 year old man who tried to save his friends was taken to Chania General suffering from hypothermia.
