naftemporiki — Special anti-corruption magistrates have calculated the monetary damages for the Greek state from the 2002 sale of the Skaramangas shipyards  to the German consortium HDW/Ferrostaal stand at  53 million euros.

A relevant indictment was delivered on Monday by a special prosecutor’s office handing major corruption cases, concluding that  the circumstances surrounding the sale can be further probed, while the possibility of filing criminal charges against specific individuals will also be examined.

According to judicial sources in Athens, the monetary losses may be higher, as the primary reason for the privatization was not to collect the proceeds from the sale, but the continued operation of the industrial concern and the shipyards’ modernization.

The German consortium paid a total of 47.1 million euros in cash for the Greek shipyard in 2002. The European Commission had approved the takeover by HDW/Ferrostaal, following objections by rival shipyard Elefsina who claimed the sale violated competition rules.

The Telegraph:”In 2013 the former defence minister Akis Tsochadzopoulos was jailed after being found guilty of receiving an €8m bribe from Ferrostaal, one of the German companies involved in the deal. Ferrostaal agreed to pay a €140m fine”
