More arrests ordered over arms kickbacks

Kathimerini — Corruption prosecutor Nikos Tsironis on Tuesday issued three new arrests warrants as part of an ongoing investigation into millions of euros’ worth of kickbacks paid in armament procurements and particularly for anti-tank missiles.

Police on Tuesday arrested a prominent businessman and arms dealer, Constantinos Dafermos, while warrants are also pending against his son and a close associate.

The investigation was prompted over a year ago by revelations made by Antonis Kantas, the former deputy head of procurements at the Defense Ministry between 1996 and 2002, who allegedly told investigators that had received millions of euros in bribes while in office.

New evidence allegedly points to a deposit of 800,000 euros made by Dafermos to Kantas.

The arrest last week of another prominent businessman, Thomas Liakounakos, is also linked to the probe.
