eKathimerini — The Education Ministry is in dispute with a private school in Athens after stepping in to prevent it bringing in evaluators who have not been appointed by the state.
Nea Genia Ziridis decided to carry out its own evaluation of teaching staff but this prompted a complaint from the Federation of Private School Teachers (OIELE), which argued that only assessors appointed by the Education Ministry can carry out these checks.
Education Minister Nikos Filis informed the school that the Constitution and a presidential decree issued in 2013 prevent the school from carrying out its own evaluation.
The school, however, said that even under these guidelines the school has sole responsibility for its teaching staff. It also pointed out that the state has for the time being suspended its evaluation of schools, meaning carrying out its own assessment is the only option it has.
