Mallorca and Crete most popular islands among Germans in the summer of 2016

Tornos News — When it comes to top holiday islands for Germans in 2016, Majorca and Crete are this year once again in high demand, even if booking percentages for package tours have fallen by 15 percent  since 2014.

In addition, hotels with a maximum of three stars this year are even more popular than 2015.

These are the main conclusions of a recent study of the travel package bookings to European islands from January to March during the last three years, conducted by CHECK24.

More than half of German tourists spend their annual summer trip to Mallorca(39.8 percent) or Crete (10.5 percent) followed by Gran Canaria (8.3 percent), Fuerteventura (7.9 percent) and Tenerife (6.7 percent), Rhodes (5.3 percent) Ibiza ( 3.8 percent) , Madeira (2.7 percent) Corfu and Lanzarote (2.0 percent). According to CHECK24, booking proportion of middle-class hotels has increased, reaching a peak of up to 68 percent.

Four-star accommodations are booked less frequently compared to last year and five-star hotels have an even lower booking share.

Germans who booked a package holiday at Ibiza and Corfu for 2016 preferred hotels with fewer stars compared to other island destinations in Europe.

Last year, the two islands attracted German reservations of 3.7-stars on average while this year this index has fallen to 3.4 stars.

The island with most higher class hotels was Fuerteventura averaging 4 stars.
