High court orders state to tackle Asopos River pollution issue

Greece’s Council of State has ordered the state to take immediate action to tackle high pollution levels in the Asopos River, in central Greece.

The area hosts hundreds of factories that allegedly dump waste into the river, which, in turn, supplies drinking water to local residents.

The high court ordered authorities to inspect manufacturing facilities, impose fines and even issue orders for units to close down following an appeal by a group of residents.

The state was also ordered to propose waste management solutions.
