Greece is the word for 2016 as Tenerife also proves popular with early holiday bookers

Mirror — You’ve packed away the Christmas decorations and eaten the last mince pie – it’s all detox and diets as the January blues well and truly set in.

So of course it’s time to cheer yourself up by planning your annual holiday .

January bookings are a weather vane for the travel industry – early indicators of customer confidence and popular destinations.

Last year Paris topped Google’s travel-related searches. This year it’s dropped out of the Top 10, leaving the number one spot for perennial favourite New York (which came third last year).

While destinations that are consistently popular such as Australia and Italy remain, Turkey also fails to make the Top 10 this year.

The big winners are Greece and Tenerife .

Google’s findings are borne out by Thomas Cook. A spokesman said: “Spain, in particular Tenerife, and Greece are our most searched-for destinations for a summer holiday.”
