Xinhua — Macedonian border with Greece, Gevgelija, was blocked on Thursday for a few hours by Macedonian taxi drivers, who ask for the right to have the priority on the transport of refugees.
Starting from 10:00 in the morning the taxi drivers from the town of Gevgelija blocked the main border crossing with Greece.
They request to be given priority in the transportation of refugees crossing in from Greece on their way to central Europe through the Balkans.
The refugees largely use the trains available in Gevgelija, but have also provided a worthy business for taxi drivers taking them on the two and a half hour drive to the Serbian border.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours a total of 1,817 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq crossed into Macedonia with the intent to claim asylum.
At the end of January, Macedonian taxi drivers, demanding that authorities allow them to carry transient migrants to Serbia staged a five-day protest that had closed a key railway line, slowing migrant flows to Serbia.
