Cancer incidents and deaths on the increase in Crete

A study by the centre for monitoring and recording cancer incidents  found that there is a  worrying increase in the number of cancer cases in Crete. The number of cancer deaths has also increased in the study period, between 1992 and 2013.

According to the researchers, B Georgoula, H Lioni and D Mavroudi new cases in Crete   increased from 448.7 to 574.2/100,000 /year  for men, while   the number of new cancers  in women increased from  408.2 to 514.1 /100,000 year.

There was a corresponding increase in the number of deaths. For men the numbers of cancer related deaths increased from 189.2 /100,000/ year  in 1992 to 201.5 /100,000 /year  in 2013.

For women the numbers of dearths during the same period  rose from 98 to 124.6/ 100,000.

The greatest numbers of new cancer cases were recorded in the municipalities of Heraklion, Hersonisos, Rethymnon and Chania
