A German Condor Airways Boeing 757 with 273 passengers on board made an emergency landing at Chania airport on Thursday after reporting a bomb threat.
The Dusseldorf bound plane, escorted by two F16 fighters, landed at 20:47 and taxied to the side of the military base where the passengers disembarked and the plane was searched by experts with the help of two sniffer dogs.
No explosives were found and the bomb scare turned out to be a hoax.
The passengers will spend the night in hotels and are expected to continue on their journey by late morning on Friday, to give the crew enough time to rest.
Condor is Germany’s second-largest commercial airline. Hurghada in Egypt is a popular tourist destination on the Red Sea coast.
