An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale hit the Southern Aegean sea, just north of Chania, on Tuesday afternoon.
The centre of the earthquake was in the Aegean Sea, around 44 kilometres north of Chania. The epicentre depth was estimated at 14 km from the surface which made the quake felt across Chania.
The earthquake lasted for a few seconds and there have not been reports of any injuries or damage

Location : Chania 41km from epicentre – I thought a huge truck was bouncing down the road….and looked out the window….a few seconds later the entire house shook…bounced..and a four of us felt it…the house next door…they..went outside…
Location: Chania – I was in the car, stopped by the side of the road. I thought that someone hopped on my car.
Location: Tavronitis 42 km from epicentre – Just heard a low rumble and the floor shook for about ten seconds.
Location: Vamvakopoulo 43km km from epicentre – It was short, but quite strong. Felt it through my chair, like a swaying movement.
Location: Kalyves 51 km from epicentre – We experienced what other contributors here did – a rumbling noise as though a heavy vehicle were going by us, which lasted for about ten seconds. Our building, built to withstand earthquakes, did not move. Our cats and dogs did not react.
Location: Gavalochori 55 km from epicentre – Deep rumbling noise accompanied by quite strong shaking.
Location: Rethymnon 73 km from epicentre – Very weak but could be felt
A second weaker quake measuring 3.5 R was recorded in the same location seven minutes later (15:21)
