The first incident occurred around 11 am in Chryssi Akti, the Blue Flag beach 2.5 km west of Chania. A 65 year old local woman in distress was pulled out of the water by the life guard where she asked for her inhaler, which was found in her belongings on the beach. The woman died on the way to the hospital after further first aid was administered by a doctor and the ambulance crew that arrived on the scene.
The second incident occurred minutes after midday at a secluded beach in Kokkino Chorio in Apokoronas, when a woman was pulled unconscious out of the water by her friends. She was taken to the hospital where her death was confirmed. No details about here identity were released, but she is believed to be a European national visiting the area. A coroner’s investigation will determine the cause of death.
