Authorities in Crete have arrested a 44 year old Spanish man for attempting to remove artefacts from an archaeological site in Falassarna, Kissamos, west of Chania.
The man entered the site in broad daylight equipped with metal detector and excavation tools and started sweeping the ground for treasure.
A guard reported the 44-year-old and he was arrested.
In his bag, officials found eight coins and several other small metal objects objects that may have been part of archaeological treasure.
The suspect will appear before a prosecutor.
Falasarna was built around 333 BC, and the site includes several imposing sandstone towers and bastions and a closed harbour ringed by stone quays with mooring stones, and connected to the sea through two artificial channels. Notable finds in the harbour area include public roads, wells, warehouses, an altar, and baths. Most of these structures were revealed by excavations that began in 1986.
