Travel report: Best traditional destinations in Chania of Crete

Tornos News — Due to its mild year round climate, Chania is an ideal all year round holiday destination.  It is a real shame that airlines have not yet caught up with that fact and stop direct flights from european destinations in the winter months. Here are some of the many sites of  Chania worth visiting :

The Old Venetian Port of Chania, is a picturesque seaside walk lined up with elegant residences that once belonged to important Venetian rulers. Some of these have been turned into exclusive boutique hotels that boast magnificent views of the port and the lighthouse.

Before WW2 Chania was also home to a lively Jewish community. The Ezt Hayyim synagogue, a few meters from the port, is a clear reminder of the city’s Jewish past.

The pinkish domes of the Mosque of the Janissaries lie right across from the lighthouse and are a trademark of the city.

Splantzia, a neighbourhood with a unique atmosphere. The main square is dominated by the church of Agios Nikolaos wich dates back to the Venetian era, features a minaret as well as a bell tower.

Not far from Splantzia another landmark of the city known as the Municipal Market of Chania is located. It opened  in 1913 the year  Crete joined Greece.
