The sudden early summer downpour caused traffic chaos once again both in the town of Chania and the national road between Chania and Kissamos where most of the rainfall was recorded.
Most of the problems were in the centre of town where a number of small accidents cause long delays in traffic and in the area around MAICH, (Souda to ABSupermarket) where the road flooded, as did the road– Chania to Perivolia to the north of the national road.
On the national road the downpour cased a land slide at Kolymbari resulting to the national road closing in both directions for over an hour.
Minor land slides were also reported on the national road at Stalos and Agia Marina, with the region and the municipality working to keep the national road open for most of the afternoon.
The authorities recommend caution when driving on the national road west of Chania.
According to the meteorological service, the unsettled weather is expected to continue for at least another day
Samaria gorge is closed to visitors until further notice and the boat service from Agia Marina to Thodorou islet was suspended.
