Adopt-a-stray day on Sunday was another successful animal welfare initiative from Apokoronas council. The event took place in Kalyves and drew a sizeable crowd of supporters, volunteers and potential adopters.
Five of the 14 stray Apokoronas puppies found good permanent new homes. All the puppies for adoption were chipped neutered and vaccinated.
Information leaflets and posters in Greek and English were distributed to the people who came by to find out about adopting a stray.
A number of volunteers helped out in the event, many of them being European citizens, residents in Apokoronas. A significant number of local Greek young people and children turned up to find out about the scheme and enquired about adopting a stray animal.
Rena Terezaki, Apokoronas deputy mayor, who organised the successful event said : “I wish, on behalf of the council, to express my thanks to all the volunteers without whom the event would not be possible. I also want to thank all the people who came to find out about the stray animals and those who were able to offer a permanent home to some of our strays”.
It is worth noting that Apokoronas is one of the first councils in Crete to organise neutering-and-release sessions in partnership with the charity Arche Noah, thanks to the efforts of Mrs Terezaki and the commitment of the Mayor Mr Koukianakis to address the problem of stray animals.
There are still several puppies and adult dogs and cats, all neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, that need a permanent good home. For more information contact Apokoronas council.
