KeepTalkingGreece — With 3101 hours of sunshine per year, Ierapetra is Greece’s sunniest city according to the Greek Metereological Service HNMS .So it was something of a surprise for the residents and visitors of Platis Yalos in Ierapetra to wake up on Thursday to a snow covered beach.
According to CretaPost.gr, it is the first time it snowed in Ierapetra after 25 years.
On higher ground a generous cover of snow disrupted road communications and some mountain villages were temporarily cut off.
School closed on Wednesday because of the snow on several villages, giving pupils a couple of extra days Christmas break.
