Seamen, civil servants strike on Thursday

eKathimerini — Ferries are to remain moored in ports across the country on Thursday as seamen stage a 24-hour strike in protest at the latest round of cuts to pensions and job insecurity.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) condemned the “demolition” of its members’ pension fund, the “trivialization” of pensions, the reduction of auxiliary pensions, the increase in uninsured work and the violation of labor rights.

Creditors’ demands for a relaxation of labour rights have stalled negotiations between government officials and foreign envoys.

Civil servants will also be walking out on Thursday, after their union, ADEDY, on Monday called for a general strike.

The union is calling on the government to cease all job evaluation of workers and administrative structures that could lead to streamlining, abolish all laws that resulted in lower salaries and pensions, protect collective bargaining and stop all forms of flexible labour.
