Euractive — A majority of Greeks want the UK to remain in the EU ahead of the 23rd June referendum, according to a new poll.
Cash-strapped Athens is in negotiations with its international creditors to complete the first assessment of the country’s third bailout in a Eurogroup meeting due tomorrow (24 May).
Analysts suggest that the Brexit referendum, in combination with the fragile EU-Turkey refugee deal, as well as unpredictable Spanish elections (26 June), have created fertile ground for the Greek government to push for a rapid compromise.
Brexit
According to a poll published on Sunday (22 May) by the left-wing Avgi, 55% of those surveyed are against a Brexit, while 25% are in favour.
The most ardent supporters of the UK staying in the EU are centre-right New Democracy voters (79%) and the socialist Democratic coalition (76%) while Syriza voters are marginally in favour (52%).
Euroscepticism on the rise
Regarding the EU, only 43% of Greeks polled have a positive opinion, while 55% are negative.
On the euro 54% have a positive opinion about the euro, while 44% have a negative one.
Just eight months ago, those who were negative reached 32%.
Asked whether things would get better in the event that Greece returned to the drachma, 47% said that the economic situation would deteriorate, while 32% claimed it would improve.
