eKathimerini — One in six motorists stopped for inspection by Traffic Police officers over the long weekend was found to have violated the highway code.
According to figures released on Thursday, police carried out checks on a total of 51,256 vehicles from August 12 through August 15 and recorded 8,885 traffic violations around the country.
The largest number of violations were speeding offences, with 1,372 people charged with exceeding the speed limit in the area that they were stopped.
Officers also booked 670 people for drink driving, 312 for not wearing a seat belt and 248 for driving in the wrong direction.
