Deputy Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas met with the leadership of the Greek Police to discuss security measures for the November 17th anniversary of the 1973 student uprising against the dictatorship at the National Technical University of Athens, according to Greek reports.
The “Polytechnio” uprising anniversary rally is often followed by violent riots instigated by anarchists. In the years of the economic crisis, the riots have become more extensive and destructive.
This year there is more reason for authorities to be alarmed after a recent “call to arms” of jailed anarchist Nikos Romanos, the 22-year-old who seven years ago saw his friend Alexandros Grigoropoulos die after being shot by police.
Romanos is serving a 15-year prison sentence for armed robbery after he swore that he will take arms to avenge his friend. On November 11 Romanos and friend Panagiotis Argyrou wrote an extensive text declaring war against the state and society. The text was uploaded on an anarchist website.
The statement calls for killings, bombings, vandalisms, and destruction and occupation of public buildings and multinational company headquarters.
