This week sees the first bicycle police patrols in Chania, one of six Greek towns chosen to run a pilot programme using officers on electric bikes to patrol the streets.
The officers are specially selected and trained and will concentrate their rounds in the tourist areas of the old town. Their responsibilities will extend to policing health and hygiene in catering outlets and breaches of traffic regulations.
The it is hoped that the new force will better serve the public with information and also create a sense of security through an increased police presence.
