eKathimerini — Greek political parties on Wednesday condemned a homophobic attack against a 30-year-old PhD student in Rethymnon by three individuals on Sunday.
According to local media reports, the victim, a student at the University of Crete in Rethymno, was attacked while walking down the street with a male friend, who managed to flee. The 30-year-old was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries.
The victim is now recovering out of danger and his eye has been saved.
Police arrested two men who were later released after appearing before a prosecutor.
Ruling SYRIZA said that the motives of the attackers were homophobic, and expressed its concern over incendiary right-wing rhetoric.
“Relevant authorities must do their utmost to complete the investigation as soon as possible,” it said.
New Democracy said it condemns the incident in “the most absolute way.”
“Such disgusting hate-filled behavior has no place in today’s Greece,” it said in a statement
