eKathimerini — Pierre Moscovici, the European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, has described Greece’s former finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, as a narcissist in his new book “Midnight in Europe.”
“With his frantic pre-occupation with the media and unbridled narcissism, Varoufakis drew the limelight on himself and for several months cannibalized the discussions,” he writes, in reference to the endless negotiations between Greece and its international creditors in 2015 when Varoufakis was finance minister.
Moscovisi added that Varoufakis’s “endless and repeated speeches filled with contempt knocked out” his frustrated partners, who, as a result, also toughened their stance.
“He contributed to the tension at the talks by refusing any negotiation,” Moscovici writes.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, he said, “stuck the knife deeper in the wound with the appointment of Varoufakis as finance minister.”
