Minoan lines to install scrubbers on Crete ferries ahead of compliance deadline

Minoan Lines owner, Grimaldi Group has started installing scrubbers on three of its ferries ahead of compliance deadline date of  January 1, 2020. Grimaldi says this will make Minoan the first operator in Greek coastal shipping to comply with the new emission reduction requirements.

The company has changed its itineraries on the Pireaus – Chania – Heraklion route until 21 December to accommodate the work.

Scrubbers are pollution control devices that are used to remove some particulates and gases from exhaust streams. removing about 90% of the sulphur dioxide using sea water to absorb gases.  They have the added benefit of removing about 70% of particulate matter which is also harmful to health.

Danish shipping and logistics company DFDS has also unveiled its plans to install scrubbers on 12 freight ferries deployed on freight routes in the Mediterranean between Turkey, Italy, Greece and France.
