A player in Greece’s second tier football league who appeared to feign injury, was dropped by medics as he was stretchered from the field.
Footage from the match between Ergotelis of Heraklion and Larissa which was being broadcast live on television, shows the referee signal a free kick after the player hits the turf and remains grounded.
Whilst the merits of the decision triggers an angry debate among players and officials, it’s the actions of the trainers who ran onto the field to help the “injured” player that have thrust the incident into the world spotlight.
Not only do they appear to throw the footballer onto the stretcher – triggering a nasty rebuke from the player – but they then proceed to drop him en route to the sideline.
One of the trainers then lands on the player as he attempts to haul the stretcher back into the air, before finally dropping him back onto the turf when they make it over the line.
Larissa won the game 2-1
