Rain in early August is very unusual for Crete, let alone the torrential rain that fell for in some parts of the island on Saturday causing considerable damage to crops and property.
Worst hit was south Heraklion where 10.9 mm of rain in 20 minutes caused flash floods washing away two cars and covering several others in mud.
In several parts of the prefecture, hail has reportedly caused damage to agricultural produce that was ready for harvest.
Heavy rain and hail also fell in mountainous parts of the Rethymnon prefecture.
