A heat wave with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius in the mainland and 35 -37 in the islands and Crete is expected to reach Greece in the following day meteorologists and the Civil Protection Authority warn.
High temperatures are expected to last till the end of the week. According to Greek meteorologists, temperature will reach 39C on Tuesday in Serres, Thessaly and central Greece, while it will climb to 37C in the islands. Humidity levels will increase and winds will be weak.
Local authorities in Chania are opening air conditioned areas in former townhalls to the public.
By the weekend temperatures are expected to drop by 2-3 degrees.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection recommends during the heat wave
- avoid sunbathing, walking, running and heavy physical labour.
– wear light and comfortable clothes, hats and sunglasses.
– eat light and small meals with emphasis on fruits, vegetables and reduced fat food.
- drink plenty of water
Newborns, infants, the elderly and people with chronic diseases should be especially careful.
