eKathimerini — The union representing workers on Greek ferry boats on Tuesday announced a 48-hour strike for January 20 and 21 in protest at the government’s social security reform plans.
The PNO union’s executive committee met on Tuesday to discuss what steps it would take in response to the social security overhaul, saying that the government’s draft law is “cause for war.”
According to the draft law, the social security funds insuring workers in the shipping and maritime transport sectors will be merged into a national insurance body, EFKA.
The plan has also caused friction with the social security fund for sailors, NAT, which was on the second day of a 48-hour strike on Tuesday.
PNO’s action means there will be no ferry services to and from the Greek islands and other destinations on January 20 and 21.
