The 420-meter, 20,000 TEU (20 ft container) carrier “China Cosco Taurus” arrived at Piraeus’ pier III inaugurating ‘a silk road by sea’ route from China to Rotterdam.
According to an announcement on Monday by Piraeus’ Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Commerce, the port of Piraeus is one of the very few ports in Europe that can handle such giant container ships because of its depth, and soon will be the only facility in the Mediterranean able to handle five such vessels at the same time.
Chinese multinational Cosco assumed control of the Piraeus Port Authority in August 2016 after purchasing a majority stake, after winning an international tender.
