ekathimerini — The Civil Aviation Authority has released the 10 million euros needed to restart work on the expansion of Thessaloniki’s airport, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure Panayiotis Sgouridis announced on Friday.
The plan is to expand the existing runway as well as to clear another strip of land mines to create a second runway.
Thessaloniki international is one of the fourteen airports that were offered to Fraport on a 1.2 billion euro deal with the German state owned company. Fraport has a commitment to invest €330 million to upgrade the 14 airports in the first four years.
Thessaloniki airport’s latest investment injection comes as part of a 246 million euro EU-funded upgrade which started in 2011 and is expected to be completed next year.
There is an ongoing 110 million euro upgrade at Chania airport which is also included in the Fraport deal
