A fire which broke out in a ravine close to the village of Kalamitsi Alexandrou in Apokoronas on Monday afternoon spread quickly destroying large areas (70 stremma) of grazing and forest and a further 30 stremma of olive cultivations and agricultural land fanned by strong north westerly winds
A number of fire crews and 10 appliances from Chania, Vrysses and Anopolis, municipal earth moving equipment, a fire helicopter and many volunteers managed to put the fire under control a little after midnight Monday.
According to Apokoronas mayor Koukianakis the helicopter made a significant contribution to getting the fire under control. Speaking to local ERT radio Mr Koukianakis also said that it is very likely that the fire started by human activity as there are no electricity substations or pylons in the area the fire started.
