Police closed the westbound lane of the national road at Vamvakopoulo junction west of Chania after a large quantity of fertiliser was spilled on the road just after 19:00 yesterday.
The fertiliser most likely fell off the back of a truck and it was spread by passing traffic covering a large area of the road surface and making driving hazardous .
The fire department was called to clean up the road surface but they were unable to safely hose down the road, so the job of cleaning was passed on to the Chania cleaning department who arrived at the scene a little after 8 pm.
aPolice are trying to locate the driver of the vehicle that was carrying the fertiliser.
