A rescue operation started at 4:30 am Friday to locate a seaman who went missing from the Piraeus bound ferry Elyros. The man was not located despite a day long search that involved eight search an rescue coastguard boats, a helicopter and several other private and commercial vessels thart were in the sea area off Milos island. Weather conditions were said to be very difficult with 8 bft strong winds and heavy seas. The search restarted at dawn on Saturday.
The 34-year-old crew member of Elyros was last seen leaving his cabin after the ship left Souda. The coastguard was alerted when a search onboard the ship failed to locate the seaman.
All vessels transiting in the area were notified to be on the look-out of the missing seaman.
