A series of small earthquakes were felt in eastern Crete over the last 48 hours. The strongest of these measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was recorded at about 4:40 on Thursday morning.
According to the Institute of Geodynamics and the National Observatory of Athens the epicenter of the earthquake was located 67 km SE of Ágios Nikólaos , 16 kilometers east-northeast of Zakros
The earthquake took place at a depth of 28 kilometers and was felt across Zakros, Paleokastro, as well as the eastern and southern sections of Lasithi.
Two smaller tremors followed the main earthquake, on at 4:46 measuring 2.9R and another at 4:50 measuring 3.4R.
No damages have so far been reported as a result of the seismic activity.
Earthquakes occur very frequently in Crete – most of them are not even noticed.
