A 25 year old man from Rethymno died after driving off a cliff, in the area of Tria Monastiria near the taverna Koryfi around 10 pm on Thursday.
Customers at the taverna who witness the accident called the police.
It took about two hours to locate the car in the dark and the body of the driver was found and recovered outside the car. Emergency services searched the area through the night for other possible casualties, as it was not known if there were other passengers in the car.
The causes of the accident are investigated by the Traffic Police.
