Chios builds new ‘modern’ refugee hotspot
sigmalive.com — A modern temporary migrant and refugee accommodation centre (hotspot) which can host about 1,000 people opened on Monday on the island of Chios, the local municipality said on Tuesday.
The centre was built by the municipality of Chios, with the help of the UN’s refugee agency (UNCHR), volunteers, who immediately responded to the municipality’s call for help, and local services.
According to island deputy mayor Giorgos Karamanis, refugees and migrants will stay either in one of the 18-square-metre homes or in tents of 240-square-metres placed around the camp. The homes are built from thermally insulated and non-combustible material. The floors have been raised and insulated, while the UNCHR is expected to provide radiators. Authorities also created drains for the removal of rain water and installed pumps.
Water will be provided by the public network and floodlights will light the camp, while sockets are located around the grounds. For personal hygiene, authorities included two containers with showers and wash basins that provide hot water. The camp also has a playground area for children and medical or other services will be provided in a nearby tent. There are also storage areas and a place to distribute goods.
Authorities also said the camp will be staffed around the clock.
