The rented car of the missing French tourist was located near the beach at Atherinolakos in the south of the island. There is no sign of the missing man who is thought to be 75 years old.
The police has asked the Siteia cost guard for help in the the search for the missing man.
Just before midday police recovered a body believed to be that of the missing French national, at Livari beach, two km away from the abandoned car.
The body bears several injuries and was taken to the coroners office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death of the unfortunate tourist.
