RT — Ryanair issued a press release on Wednesday 18 May.announcing a “Fly Home to Vote Remain” sale, offering seats for €19.99 for travel on June 23, the day of the referendum, and the day before, “to help the more than 1.2 million Brits living abroad fly back to vote.”
This was a limited 24 hour offer which expired at midnight of 19 May, but it was given considerable publicity in the UK , even though the news came too late for most expat voter/travellers to take advantage of the offer.
Following a complaint by Brexit campaigners that the Ryanair offer breaks anti-bribery and election laws, UK police launched an investigation.
Vote Leave has reported the airline to Scotland Yard, claiming its ‘Brexit special’ breaches referendum rules and the Bribery Act on “treating.”
Ryanair responded by extending the offer to midnight of 20 May.
Michael O’Leary Chief Executive of Ryanair has been bold in his support to keep the UK in the European Union, despite the fact he himself cannot vote.
