A young bike rider from Chania lost his left leg below the knee after a serious accident at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, involving a truck belonging to a contractor working in the area.
The accident happened on the National Road at Vrysses by the Kondaros event and entertainment hall.
Eye witnesses say they saw the bike rider flying through the air after the impact. Emergency rescue services report that the man had lost his limb when they arrived at the scene. The man is treated at Chania hospital.
Apokoronas mayor Charalambos Koukianakis expressed his concern about the number of accidents in that particular part of the road many of which are attributed to the sub standard state of the the National Road. Once again a tragic event demonstrates the importance of having a proper National Road instead of calling a provincial road ‘national'” Mr Koukianakis said, calling once again on the authorities to take some action to improve safety on VOAK.
