eKathimerini — Athens backs the “democratically elected government” in Turkey, government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili said early Saturday following the attempted military coup in the neighboring country.
Gerovasili added that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will call Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim on Saturday.
Meanwhile in a message on his Twitter account, the Greek prime minister said that “the government and people of Greece are following the ongoing situation in Turkey standing for democracy and constitutional order.”
In Washington, US President Barack Obama urged all parties in Turkey to support the “democratically elected government.” NATO called for “full respect” for Turkey’s democratic institutions.
