Apokoronas mayor Koukianakis announced that the creation of a Higher Education Technical Institute ( IEK) in Apokoronas was a step nearer after the ministry of education in Athens approved the council’s application. Athens recognised the benefits to the community and the economy of Apokoronas, Mr Koukianakis said. The project had the full support of Chania MP and former Development minister Mr Stathakis. .
The IEK will be housed in the unused Georgioupolis town hall in Kavros and will be offering courses in tourism and hospitality, animal husbandry and agricultural product production, all of which are a significant part of economic activity in Apokoronas and the wider area. The IEK will thus contribute to the economy of Apokoronas and will at same time offer an alternative route of training for many of the young people in the region who have no educational opportunities near their home.
