A sixty year old woman died on the beach in Kavros in Apokoronas on Sunday afternoon when she was pulled unconscious out of the water by the life guard just after 3:00 in the afternoon.
The life guard and doctor who arrived on the scene offered first aid but were unable to resuscitate the unfortunate woman tourist.
An ambulance took the woman to the Rethymnon Hospital where her death was confirmed.
The coastguard and police were notified. The identity and the cause of death of the unfortunate swimmer will be determined in the coroners report.
This was the fifth recorded death from drowning in Crete since the beginning of June.
