The Globe and Mail — Greek police say a 22-year-old American tourist has been fatally injured in a bar brawl on the island of Zakinthos.
Police said in a statement Friday that the man was beaten to death by a group of people at the bar early Friday in Lagana, an area of the island known for frequently rowdy behaviour by young foreign tourists, where in 2011, a 19-year-old British tourist was killed by two taxi drivers.
Police say a 34-year-old Greek and a 32-year-old British man of Serbian origin have been arrested and were to appear before a prosecutor on murder charges. They say an investigation to identify the rest of the people involved is ongoing.
The victim was later identified as Bakari Henderson, 22, from Austin Texas, a recent University of Arizona graduate.
He had been traveling with his Phi Gamma Delta fraternity brothers when he was killed.
According to security video footage filmed at the bar where the brawl broke out, about 10 people participated in beating Bakari Henderson, who died of massive head injuries.
A police source on the island told Greek daily Kathimerini that the fight appeared to have broken out following a petty dispute over someone setting their drink down on a table occupied by a different group. On leaving the bar, a group of Serbian patrons allegedly attacked Henderson, threw him onto the road and started punching and kicking him.
The 22-year-old was rushed to a local hospital with severe head injuries but was pronounced dead on arrival. It remained unclear Friday whether any of the assailants used knives in the attack but an autopsy was expected to determine cause of death.
