The mayor of Apokoronas, Charalambos Koukianakis is worried about the adequacy of water supplies for the summer season.
In a press statement Mr Koukianakis points out that the water at lake Kournas is at its September level while the prolonged drought and the strong southerlies have forced farmers to start watering their fields using their agricultural water supply.
This year the rainfall recorded last month was at 15 – 20 % of February average for the last three years.
Apokoronas council is doing all it can to improve water management in the municipality. A survey has been commissioned to look at extending the water network to the east of Vamos as far as Georgioupolis and Kavros to supply these areas with water from wells in Fone and Maza.
Mr Koukianakis has called for some joint action between the neighbouring municipalities that take their water from lake Kournas in Apokoronas to better manage the water resources, and pointed out the need for building water reservoirs in both Rethymnon and Apokoronas
