Greek authorities on Wednesday took delivery of a batch of humanitarian aid from the United Kingdom, including hundreds of tents and blankets, as part of the country’s contribution to the migration crisis in Greece.
The donation – including 1,000 tents, 61,900 blankets, four mobile generators and 8,000 sleeping bags is worth1.24 million euros, according to a statement on the British Embassy’s website.
The relief was put together following Greece’s request for the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism last December, the embassy said. The delivery was received at Athens International Airport by the head of Greece’s Civil Protection Authority, Yiannis Kapakis, and Andrew Staunton, the deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Athens.
“We know and understand the great pressure Greece has been under because of the huge influx of people, migrants and refugees and we have been impressed by the way ordinary Greek people have responded to this crisis,” Staunton said.
