Dozens of people died on the Cretan roads in 2015 a black year for the families who mourned the loss of loved ones
During 2015 there were 70 recorded deaths on the roads of Crete, and increase from the 56 recorded deaths the previous year.
Road safety organizations in Crete attribute the cause of the fatal accidents to lack of safety precautions such as the wearing of seatbelts and helmets, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving (‘it could never happen to me’ attitude) and excessive speed.
While recognising the responsibility of drivers and rif=ders for the large number of accidents, road safety experts have also pointed o the poor state of the roads and infrastructure (signs, lighting and surface) of roads for which the state and regional authorities are responsible.
