Spring storms cause disruption across Chania prefecture – Unsettled weather with storms till Friday

Sudden downpours in the late afternoon brought traffic chaos in Chania with a number of minor accidents during the afternoon rush causing bottlenecks in the main roads of the town.

Samaria Gorge remained closed from around 10AM when the meteorological office issued a severe weather warning. Walkers who were already in the gorge were led out to safety in Agia Roumeli before the water levels in the gorge rose to dangerous levels.

In Gavdos island at the southern end of the prefecture hail disrupted the activities of the residents and visitors and gave a wintery look to the place.

The forestry department closed the Agia Eirini gorge I n Kandanos closed all day as a safety precaution.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue till Friday. The meteorological service warned of the possibility of heavy rain and storms in the next 24 hours.

On Wednesday, heavy rain and storms are expected to spread in the Cyclades, the eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese, the Ionian Sea, Epirus and western Central Greece. Rainy, stormy weather is forecast for most of the country on Thursday.
