Weekend weather causes problems across the island

Saturday’s heavy downpour caused problems across the island. The National road at Skepasti in Rethymnon had on lane closed because of a landslide.

Roads in Heraklion turned into impassable rivers and the road surface was severely damaged on many country roads.

Major problems were also experienced  in Lassithi, due to bad weather with landslides in many roads.

in Chania the heavy rain caused a 15 minute power cut.

Storm force winds followed the rain causing the cancellation of the ferry service from Souda on Saturday evening.

Police advises caution when driving on the national road, particularly at the following locations where there have been landslides following heavy rain in recent months:

Kalami, 16th  km

Harakiani, 90th km

Sisses Fodele,  100th km

KTEO, 145th km

Selinari, 175th km

The same weather conditions are expected to last until late on Sunday evening with strong northerly winds and much lower temperatures.
